For years, human-in-the-loop has been the accepted model for making AI usable in the enterprise. It made sense in the early era of machine learning and intelligent document processing: when models were uncertain, humans stepped in to review, correct, and improve outcomes. Internally, even our own industry has long associated human-in-the-loop with quality control, supervision, and exception handling.
But enterprise expectations have changed.
Businesses do not buy Enterprise AI platforms so that humans can stay in the way of work. They buy these platforms for three outcomes: accuracy, automation, and affordability. What they do not want is more manual intervention. What they want is confidence that machines can do more work autonomously, while humans remain in control of the system.
That is why the next evolution of enterprise AI is Human-On-the-Loop.
From human participation to human governance
Human-in-the-loop was built for model training and exception correction. It assumed the machine would frequently need a person to complete the task and teach and correct the model when it made a mistake.
Human-On-the-Loop reflects a more advanced reality. In modern agentic systems, work is no longer handled by a single rigid model. It is handled by layered inference: specialized CPU-based models for high-volume extraction, frontier GPU-based reasoning models for complex judgments, consensus techniques for ambiguous cases, and thresholds that determine when confidence is high enough to proceed automatically.
The ideal platform intelligently applies the most appropriate – and cost-effective – inference model required for each task, instead of brute-forcing every workflow with the most expensive model available. Data & Analytics industry leaders agree on this important shift. In Gartner’s recent Data Intelligence Monthly: Executive Insights for Decision Making report, the authors state:
“To stay in control as decisions become semiautonomous, organizations need to shift from human-in-the-loop to human-on-the-loop for oversight.” A survey of D&A leaders within the same report responded overwhelmingly, where 83% agreed they needed additional technical control to manage, govern, and secure AI Agents.
Why this matters now
This shift matters because enterprise automation has widened far beyond elementary extraction.
Yes, extraction still matters. It is still difficult. It still requires high accuracy at scale. But the real enterprise challenge is now broader: organizations need to solve business processing problems around documents. They need to classify, extract, validate, match, enrich, decide, and route work across systems. Take invoice processing as one example. The challenge is rarely just reading a few fields from a clean invoice. And that is exactly why Human-On-the-Loop matters.
When multiple inference layers are orchestrated correctly, machines can handle the overwhelming majority of straightforward work automatically and cost-effectively. More advanced reasoning models can be invoked only when needed. Consensus can be used when ambiguity is high. And humans can focus on governance, oversight, and the exceptions that truly deserve attention.
That is how you balance the tension every enterprise feels:
- Accuracy, because critical decisions must be right.
- Automation, because no one wants humans manually touching every document.
- Affordability, because not every workflow should consume high token volume frontier-model compute.
The enterprise standard for agentic systems
Agentic systems will not win in the enterprise because they are the most autonomous. They will win because they are the most trustworthy.
Trustworthiness in the enterprise means more than model performance. It means:
- clear thresholds for when automation proceeds
- explainability into why a decision was made
- transparency across every inference step
- governance over human and machine roles
- and the security, compliance, and auditability required by the core of the enterprise

The future of enterprise AI is not humans in the loop everywhere.
It is humans on the loop — setting guardrails, governing decisions, and ensuring that automation is accurate, affordable, explainable, and trusted at scale.
